In a week or so, I will be sixteen. Yay! I get to drive and I am very excited, and feel pretty confident in my driving ability (practiced on a parking lot a few times). Of course, turning sixteen is something to be really excited about.
For me, it means getting a normal present (my choice; a mini tv for my room), but this year I will also be getting a job (sorta excited, I look forward to friendships but I'm a little shy). To my friends, this date would mean getting a car. Shiny, newer, with low mileage, and they won't even have to pay insurance.
Okay, I go to a private school. We do work-study, and honestly if I didn't go there I could get a pretty nice car easily. So, as you can imagine, most of my friends have more money than I do. That means that they'll be receiving nice cars (I'm old for my grade so only one has so far) and maybe then working once they can drive.
It bothers me a little, and I find it unfair that our parents' choice in life and careers determines whether we get a car or not, but it wouldn't bother me if
A) they wouldn't act like everyone in the world gets one and ask me about what kind I'm getting (which I'm not).
and B) one of my friends keeps complaining that the only reason she gets a car is to drive her siblings to school, and that she can't get a job until she can drive because no one can take her.
Okay, wouldn't this annoy you?
I mean, she has no respect for me! She's always saying "oh, I wish I could get a job" and the next minute "that's the kind of car my mom wants to get me!".
It's annoying. And I'm not jealous; I'm glad I don't get a car because I'll learn to save my money and how to pay for stuff and be independent etc.
But, honestly, it makes highschool and life in general look impossible. Having a job, having to miss band, paying for a car and gas and auto insurance...
SO please, if anyone's been there, give me advice!
I'm afraid I'll loose it before I even GET the job or a car.

Oh, and this doesn't matter but it'd be helpful:
What are some good cars that would last me through college (and possibly beyond), with good gas mileage, and cheap(ish) insurance?
I like Honda Civic LX 4D (2001), Toyota Corollas (1998-2002), and the 1997 Honda Accord. I also like Malibus, but I read they don't last, and Jettas, but they are impossible to fix for under my budget.

THANKS AND SORRY IF I SOUND WHINY, JUST HAVING A BAD YEAR

OH: I left out schoolwork. How to balance school, band, job, etc?

I hit it on the side rear and want to kn ow what to do now. Do I have to buy it or pay a penalty.? I do not want to report that to my insurance. If I want to buy it will I get a discount for the mileage (1540) the car had when I was given it? if I fix it the dealer still will sell it as a car in excellent condition? Will that affect my records? How much will it cost to repair it?

Thank you very much for your help.

Other person's fault, and their insurance is paying for it. I just got that car 6 months ago and I miss it deeply. Anyway, so now I'm waiting for my check from the insurance company to come in and this is where I need insight. I have 2 alternatives... 1) is to pay off my mom's 09 camry and take that car as my car or 2) I can use that money to put into another car.

Alternative 1: Paying off mom's car
1. My mom gets rental cars ALOT, she spends nearly $ 1000.00/mth on rental cars, so she wanted me to pay off her car, so she can get an SUV or something similar so she can drive the car out ( I told her the camry are good cars for putting mileage and good on gas, but for some reason she feels safer in an SUV...I don't know).
2. The 09 camry currently has already 65,000 miles on it.
3. I would have NO CAR payment plus a little extra cash to pay off credit card debt.

alternative 2: Getting a new car
1. I would be able to get a newer model acura with same or lower mileage
2. I would have car payments, but pretty low because of the down payment I have.

I'm more leaning towards paying off the camry, but I am a little hesitant about that. My mom is known for " Not doing what she says" in the family. Meaning she would tell you this great plan and when you go through with your end, well then she doesn't stick to her part and basically screws you (trust I know, I have been in that situation). I'm afraid that after I pay off her car, she then will decide NOT to get a car and tell me that we should share cars-which means that I will have to be dropped off and find a ride if she can't pick me up (it happened before). I don't think she would do it this time, just because she will NEED a car and save money on rental cars. So, me paying off her car would really help her out. I currently live with her without having to pay rent, or electricity bills. I just pay for the internet and cable bill and help out with groceries and I pay for my own necessities like toothpaste, shampoo, toilet paper etc..

On the other hand, I would like to get another acura because the one I had was THE best car I've had. I could just tell that car would last me for a long time. I'm afraid if I pay off the 09 camry since the mileage is so high, that problems would start on that car and I would end up spitting up cash soon.

So, what do you think?

I know nothing about cars because my parents don't drive... I am convincing my mom to buy a used car (low mileage) cuz its cheaper and insurance will be cheaper as well. But she's saying that used cars are not that reliable. and why do people sell their cars??? So, if I test drive a car at a dealership, do I need to get a temporary insurance? And, do I need to take the used car to a mechanic if i buy it from a dealer, i know you do if you buy it from a private party. What is the process of buying a car and how long does it take you to shop around? You go car shopping, get insurance, pay for the car, and then drive it home, right? Also, which insurance company is the cheapest in SF, CA. I've had my license for two years. I know its a lot of questions, but I don't know much about cars. Thanks!

They were rear ended and it was determined to be the other persons fault for sure. Anyway after the accident they both needed several trips to the Chiro. They both made right around 45 trips to the Chiro. The medical bills were all covered by our insurance because that is how PA does things. The repairs to the car were made and paid for by their insurance as well.

However all the pain and suffereing as well as the travel expense to and from (about 40 miles round trip) the dr plus my wife time lost away from our small business we own. She is currently the only employee and it is a shoppe where everything being sold we have to make. So every time she had to go to the Dr it meant no production of product to be sold plus the doors were locked so no sales for that time frame while she had to be at the Dr.

The medical that our insurance paid was right around 00 for all the trips for my wife and son. We figure she has lost about 1.5 to 2 hours out of the shop every trip she had to make to the Dr plus then you hae about 40 miles per trip to and from the Dr's office.

The other persons insurance contacted us and wanted to make a settlement of 00 for my wife and 00 for my son. I personally think they are crazy and I have talked to our insurance as well and they said that we are being lowballed.

Just in mileage alone based on IRS figure of .50 cents a mile she should be getting 0. Then if you were to figure at a minimum an hour for sales and lost production time there is another 00 and the figure is way low for what we figure sales an hour or production an hour amounts to.

We are not looking to get rich but at the same time as a new business and having to be pulled from there for Dr visits they need to pay for that time and production lost.

Any thoughts on this??

As the question says going to Florida 22nd sept to the 8th oct and we want to hire a car but im unsure of what type of car to get and what type of insurance, are their different levels or insurance to get, is one car suitable but for the extra few pounds/dollars per day its worth getting a different car?

If anyone could help id appreciate it as I have never hired a car before for this length of time and we do intend to go all over and do as much as possible i.e. down to Tampa, keys maybe etc etc.

Is one car type better than another for that sort of mileage? If it is an extra few dollars/pounds a day i dont mind paying extra for an upgrade but there are only 2 of us going, my girlfriend and myself so i dont want to pay out for a Yukon as you can imagine?

Thanks

Additional Details
Yea, my parents won't let me buy a car with my money, I turn 17 in 2 months, and I will need a car. We have 2 quite big cars that I feel really small in, and one sedan which is my brothers car. My parents won't let me get a car because my brother is not taking the car to college. A few reasons why I don't want that car is because the car is not very good in slick roads, meaning wet roads, and I just feel unsafe when it rains, and it is just a mess, plus the cars been neglected by him. My parents won't let me trade in the car because my brother needs the car when he comes back from college, he was supposed to take the car this year, but he decided not to. So I want my own car, car I want is 12,000 dollars, but price should be negotiable. The car has better gas mileage than my brothers car, and my parents cars, plus its pretty reliable. It's a smaller car, hp is less than my brothers car as well. So what can I do? My parents really don't want to pay insurance on my brothers car since its not in use if I get my own car.

I have a job as well, have good grades, and plenty of reasons why I need my own car.

Like I would go out and get the car, but I'm still 16, 2 more months till im 17, and I would need a ride to get there. My friends just got cars bought from their parents, I saved up for it. IDK what to do really. And I am a bit of a car enthusiast, and I know where to get the car serviced and stuff.

Only payment they have to pay is insurance basically, and my parents have college covered.

Like getting all my money took hard work, like seriously, and a while to get it.
Well, this car could last me a long time, and I would pay the car in full, since I have the money for it.
